The Liebster Award

I know it's taken me a while to write this post as I got my nomination back in January, but I was really honoured and excited to be nominated for a Liebster Award by Mumma McD.  I had heard of it before so more or less knew what it was about, which made it all the more special - it's like a blogging milestone for me! (Don't laugh, it takes me a long time to achieve very little!)  It was a great start to my year and will encourage me to become a better blogger, hopefully.  Thanks, Mumma McD!

So, in case you don't know, it's basically about increasing recognition for newbie bloggers that don't have so many followers, sharing the love and getting to know more new blogs.  It all, inexplicably, revolves around the number 11.

Liebster award

Here are my answers to Mumma McD's 11 questions.

  1. How did you choose the name of your blog?   I originally called it "From the early hours", a name I came up with in the first few weeks after my daughter was born and I wanted to write down my thoughts and feelings during night feeds.  It took me a while to actually set up the blog and I had no idea at that time of the huge community of parent bloggers that was out there until I started using Twitter at around the same time.   But by around two and half months Emma was already sleeping through the night most of the time and no longer needed night feeds.  My very occasional posts were written late at night and into the early hours of the morning sometimes, but I felt that the name was a bit bland and unmemorable and didn't really give any idea of what the blog was about.  So I came up with "Mummy and the Mexicans", which is kind of a silly name, but at at least it's much clearer what kind of blog it is.
  2. How much time per week do you spend on your blog?  As much time as I can, but of course I never have enough time.  Mostly at the weekend, when I can work late at night and early in the morning, about two hours a day, maybe three, plus whatever time I can snatch during the week.
  3. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?  An artist or a writer, or both.
  4. Last piece of clothing you purchased?  A pair of  red and black trousers and a white blouse in the sales.
  5. Where in the world do you live?  Mexico.  More specifically, a fast-growing city called Querétaro, about two and a half hours from Mexico City.
  6. Favourite television show at the moment?  Definitely not any of the Mexican telenovelas (soaps)! Don't get to watch much TV at the moment, and even when I do, it's rarely my choice of show.  I think I most frequently end up watching BabyTV!  If I can watch the occasional episode of Doctor Who on BBC Entertainment channel then I'm happy.
  7. Favourite actor/actress?  I don't really have just one favourite; I was going to list a few favourites but it started turning into a very long list so I erased it.  My favourite actors are in my favourite films, for the most part.  That would be a long list, too.
  8. How do you relax?  Cup of tea and something sweet, with a good book or blog to read, or watching a film.  This rarely happens, in fact!
  9. Do you have a nickname? Or did you have one as a child?  I never really had a nickname, sadly!
  10. How do you take your coffee?  No sugar, quite strong and preferably with milk, latte-style.
  11. How many hours sleep do you get each night?  Not enough!  Can't really blame the little one for this, though, she sleeps like a dream.  I just can't bring myself to go to bed early, even though I have to get up by 5am on weekdays.

Here are 11 random facts about me:

1.  I'm a Pisces and so is my daughter.

2.  I hate mayonnaise.

3.  Apart from Mexico and the UK, I've also lived in Spain (twice) and Romania.

4.  I used to wear glasses for long-sightedness, from the age of 3 until I was almost 15 when I was told I no longer needed them.

5. I've had three operations in my life - two in Mexico (my appendix out a few years ago and an emergency caesarian) and one in the UK (to correct a squint when I was about 4 or 5 years old).

6.   I love mint choc-chip ice cream and really strong dark chocolate - the higher the cocoa percentage, the better.

7.  I don't remember how to drive.  I passed my test (after failing twice) about 14 years ago and have barely driven since then.  It's one of my goals this year to re-learn to drive.

8.  Every day is a bad-hair day for me.  I don't know how to make my hair look good.

9.  I've moved house approximately 21 times in my life.

10.  One of my favourite artists is Joan Miró (especially the Constellations paintings).

11.  I passed the 11-plus exam (and went to a Grammar school for just over a year until we moved house again).

Joan Miró

Here are my 11 nominations (although I think most of them have more than 200 followers and may already have been nominated for a Liebster award, so apologies if this is the case):

Teacher by trade - Mother by nature

And here are 11 questions for my nominees:

9.  What do you struggle with the most in your everyday life?
10.  Who are your heroes?
11. Name a work of art, a poem or a book that makes you feel something.

So, there you have it, dear Readers - hopefully there are a few of you out there!  Now you know a little bit more about me, and have some interesting pictures to look at, and maybe even some new blogs to read!  All comments welcome!

    1. Thanks for reading and commenting! Glad you enjoyed it. We have one more house move this month, then hopefully we'll be able to stay put!

  2. Very interesting post. I've never heard of the Liebster awards - a really good idea!

I'm a fellow can't bring myself to go to bed early sufferer!

I always think it must be very interesting and different for people who are raising children in a different country and culture to the one they grew up in.

  3. Thanks for the comment! There are a lot of cultural differences between the UK and Mexico, I guess it's important to take the good things from each culture to pass on to our daughter.
I really have to start going to bed earlier as I get up so early for work!

  4. Thank you so much for the nomination Ruth! You are a star! I have published my post: you can see it here: - Lovely getting to know you better! :)

    1. Thanks! I'll have to read your post, I've been a bit disconnected lately!
