What struck me, when you were born, was how much you were your own separate person, no longer an extension of me as you had been while I was carrying you in my womb. Then, you were a part of me; you were mine. When you came out into the world, I realised you were a stranger who I was meeting for the first time. We had to get to know each other, little by little.
